« I am dissapointed »
02/02/2008
A few days prior to the Gaz de France open, Amélie Mauresmo commented on her withdrawal from Fed Cup.
- Amélie, how do you feel about the Fed Cup drama ? I said over a month ago that I would not be available for the FC first round against China. I called Georges Goven, the captain, to tell him. He understood that for once, I would put myself first. It was very clear in my head. I was keeping myself fit for the first part of the season. Georges felt as if he had to pick me before Marion Bartoli. He asks of the players to be perfect, but when we have such expectations, we have to be ourself faultless. He did not assume his responsabilities last july after Marion's great run in Wimbledon. It would have been only fair to include her then in the team. I responded positively although I was not feeling well at all. It has been 10 years since I played for the French team. It is an honour to play for my country and it will always be. But for this first round tie, I was very dissapointed by Georges' attitude. - But can you ever refuse a selection for the french team ? I have been amongst the best players in the world for 8 years. None at that level played as many ties as I did. Today I am only asking for a little understanding with regards to my withdrawal. Nadal for example, announced he would not be available for the 1st round of Davis Cup. Logically the spanish captain did not pick him to be in the team. He respects his decision. - A few days prior to the Open GDF, how do you feel? I took the racket back on monday. I had rested for a week. I needed to rest and recover from jetlag. Today, I feel very good physically and mentally. There is no fear of an injury. Today there is one only thing missing: confidence. That's what I was missing in Australia. - The AO brought up to the light young star Jo Wilfried Tsonga. How do you see the future of this new star of french tennis? Jo needs to carry on doing what he has been doing. Of course he will have to deal with more sollicitations. He will be much more exposed from now on, especially in Roland Garros. But he is a quiet guy, very peaceful, who relies a lot on his family and people around him. But I am not worried, he will be fine. - La rédaction - Julien Fébreau - RMC.fr
